چکیده
Clinicians and basic researchers worldwide convened at the annual Digestive Disease Week (DDW) where the latest research in the field of gastroenterology and hepatology is presented. In this report, we summarize highlights of the convention on the field of Barrett’s esophagus (BE) and associated esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). We reflect on new clinical and preclinical developments in etiology, diagnosis, surveillance, and prevention and therapy of BE and EAC in respect to current knowledge. We also discuss the relevance and impact of these findings on the future of BE and EAC research. U p d a t e o n B E a n d E A C | 17

etaplasia, the process in which one type of adult Mtissue replaces another, is a consequence of chronic tissue injury. In the esophagus, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the condition that chronically injures the squamous epithelium and causes its replacement by the intestinal-type, columnar epithelium of Barrett’s esophagus. The cell of origin for this columnar metaplasia remains unkn...

10.1586/14750708.4.6.xxx © 2 Barrett’s esophagus is a metaplastic change of the epithelium of the esophagus, caused by injury and inflammation related to gastroesophageal reflux disease. Metaplasia is defined as the transformation from one cell type to another cell type. In the case of Barrett’s esophagus, the normal squamous epithelium is replaced by a columnar epithelium-containing goblet cel...

We did expressional profiling on 24 paired samples of normal esophageal epithelium, Barrett’s metaplasia, and esophageal adenocarcinomas. Matching tissue samples representing the three different histologic types were obtained from each patient undergoing esophagectomy for adenocarcinoma. Our analysis compared the molecular changes accompanying the transformation of normal squamous epithelium wi...
متن کاملThe Esophageal Squamous Epithelial Cell—Still a Reasonable Candidate for the Barrett’s Esophagus Cell of Origin?
Barrett's esophagus is the metaplastic change of the squamous epithelium lining the distal esophagus into an intestinalized columnar epithelium that predisposes to esophageal adenocarcinoma development. The cell that gives rise to Barrett's esophagus has not been identified definitively, although several sources for the Barrett's esophagus cell of origin have been postulated. One possible sourc...
متن کاملThe Prevalence of Barrett’s Esophagus in Outpatients with Dyspepsia in Shaheed Beheshti Hospital of Kashan
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is the main known etiological factor for Barrett’s esophagus (BE), and BE is the precursor lesion of esophageal adenocarcinoma. The prevalence of BE is reported mostly from gastroenterology centers and there are only a few reported cases from outpatients with dyspepsia. A large number of patients with GERD have degrees of dyspepsia. This study primarily ai...
